The People are the Constitution Patriotic T-Shirt

Leading 20th century political philosopher Ellis Sandoz, in the Introduction to his book "A Government of Laws: Political Theory, Religion, and the American Founding," after explaining that the natural law of the People’s human rights and good is the foundation of civil government, the standard of its justness, observes, “The people are the true constitution . . . ,” i.e., the law of the Constitution, government, and the laws.

Sandoz’s important statement identifies a core, universal maxim of politics and law.  As such it not only deserves to be but should be formulated in Latin, as a way of using language to preserve and permanently engrave and inscribe it, as if written in stone.  As observed by scholars, Latin, which has a unique majesty and grandeur, which naturally and always, with aphorisms, gives the strongest impression of authoritativeness and learning and being of great importance, and which has a fixed, permanent character (because no longer spoken and not subject to dialectical pressures of usage), is the equivalent of linguistic granite, not only suitable but ideal  for permanently engraving and inscribing with language history's most important, universal, and unchanging philosophical ideas and principles.

At the top, on the front of the shirt, with the verb sunt (“are”, 3^rd person plural present tense form of the verb “to be”) omitted, customary with Latin aphorisms, is Sandoz’s maxim, rendered by the simple Latin phrase:  Populus Constitutio.  Immediately beneath it, in the middle, We the People, followed by the English translation of the Latin maxim, The People Are the Constitution.

On the shirt rear, an expression summarizing and capturing the core, broad meaning of the political maxim on the shirt front:  The People’s Natural Rights Are the Supreme  Law -- the LAW of the Constitution, Government, and the Laws.

Both of the English words people and constitution come, respectively, from the Latin words populus and constitutio.
